Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. (Sea Shepherd website, photo credit Eric Cheng)

Somewhere in this vast ocean the Japanese whaling fleet is steaming towards the Ross Sea to begin their horrific task of slaughtering a thousand whales. The task of the Steve Irwin is to search them out and interfere with their illegal operations as soon as possible before the killing begins. (Sea Shepherd website)

The International crew of the Steve Irwin are volunteers from all around the world. The crew members are from Australia, America, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, Sweden, Bermuda, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, New Zealand and Japan.

As volunteers they join because they are passionate for the cause. They are provided with a bunk, water and food. A galley of organic food is a welcome donation. In early December last year Organic Road and sister company Pacific Organics donated a pallet of food to the ‘Steve Irwin’.  The ‘Steve Irwin’ is one of the Sea Shepherds ships named after the late Australian conservationist.

It was great to get this email from Nicola.

'I just wanted to say a personal thanks from myself, and on behalf of Zin, Laura and the galley team.

Your donation and support has directly gone to making sure we have great food to work with to feed our volunteer crew.  It is really important for us to do our job well, and when it is monotonous meals are the only thing crew have to look forward to, so they are very important beyond basic nutrition. It has been an absolute joy getting to know some of you as well.

Thanks so much for helping us do our job'

Nicola
